If you played Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire, you probably look at Pokémon Go’s versions of Groudon and Kyogre and think “what pathetic weaklings”. Well, the iconic legendary duo of the third generation is about to get a glow-up, with Pokémon Go Primal Reversion finally coming to the game, allowing you to unleash the true prehistoric potential of Groudon and Kyogre.

Pokémon Go’s Primal Reversion is pretty similar to the mega evolution mechanic, with you having to complete a set of research tasks to earn primal energy or by taking part in special primal raids. As you can probably imagine, primal raids are similar to mega raids, it’s just that you’re faced with the mammoth task of taking on either Primal Kyogre or Primal Groudon. Best not to go alone on that one.

The Pokémon Go Primal Reversion debut has been saved for a special moment, the upcoming Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn event in Las Vegas on February 18-19, 2023. That means it’s less than a month until you can start picking up primal energy, giving you enough time to consider whether you’re going to concentrate on the denizen of the deep or the molten magma monster.

Once you have enough primal energy, you can turn your legendary monster of choice into its primal form for eight hours, with the cost coming down each time you use the mechanic. It’s worth making the leap though, as with Primal Kyogre as your buddy, catching water, electric, and bug-type Pokémon offers extra candy and XP, while with Primal Groudon, you can get more than usual when catching fire, grass, and ground-type Pokémon. Each primal legendary also offers boosts for the same types while in the battle party, so keep that in mind for future battle league campaigns.
